there's a technique called "pinching" where you use your fingers to literally pinch off the top of the plant where the flower buds are starting to grow. this works to make them bushier, too, on little stems with leaves.
I have never had success by pinching the new side growth just continues to try blooming. I think it has to do with the hours of light it gets.
